News and
Announcements It's Time for the Theatre! 20/09/2005 All of THOC’s stages are currently in the midst of rehearsals. Actors, directors, creative teams and the entire staff of the Cyprus Theatre Organization are hard at work so that everything will be ready for the planned premieres of the opening plays for the season, which aim at fulfilling the expectations and various tastes of the theatre-going public.
The first play of the season is entitled “The Cats”, and is ideal for our younger friends. Through the play, author and director Charis Pisias deals with laziness, greed, vanity… but these are vices which are not only found among humans, but also among the inhabitants of cat-city… Polyvios the kitten, loves to sleep and eat, but not work… Penelope the kitten, is impressed by fame and authority… Mrs. Polyvina the cat, is always trying to get her young son to become less lazy… together with other cats, and the single dog of the city, they all take part in an adventure that teaches them all a lesson. «The Cats»,
premiere on Sunday, October 9th
at the Latsia Municipal Theatre at 10:30 a.m., under the direction of
Charis Pisias, Set and Costume Design by Maria Hadjicleanthous, Music by
Michalis Roussos and Choreography by Kristis Sophocleous. The revenue from the premiere will be donated to the orphans of the airplane tragedy.
The cast and crew of THOC’s New Stage are currently working on Yves Jamiaque’s emotional comedy, “Monsieur Amilcar”. The play resembles an acrobatic stunt, which has many unexpected twists and turns up until the end and it is artfully crafted; it presents Alexander Amilcar, a man with a boosted ego who has never been very successful in his interpersonal relationships, and especially with the opposite sex. In his effort to be happy, he assembles his own ideal microcosm and hires an actress for the part of the “ideal wife”, a young harlot for his “daughter” and an unemployed artist to be his old family friend. Things, however, escape his control very quickly. The “stage” for Monsieur Amilcar’s ideal family will be ready for the public in the beginning of November at the THOC New Stage Theatre. The play is Translated by Marlena Georgiadou, Directed by Christos Zanos, Stage Design by Loizos Loizou, Costume Design by Mariza Bargilly and Music by Savvas Savva. Stavros Louras stars as Monsieur Amilcar. The play also features Annita Santorineou, Andreas Tsouris, Maria Margeti, Orestes Sophocleous, Lenia Sorokou.
The opening play of the THOC Experimental Stage, German writer Christa Wolff’s “Medea”, is anxiously awaited by the public. With this production THOC will take part in the celebrations for “Patra Cultural Capital of Europe 2006”, as part of the “New Stage for Ancient Drama” section, which will take part from May 19th to June 4th, 2006. The play is adapted and directed by Stefanos Kotsikos, and it is an exciting narrative (beyond the myth) of the life of a woman who lives between two worlds, but is a foreigner in both. It’s enough to mention her name and we are immediately taken to her times. She is a child-killer. She laughs in our face, lifts her shoulder ironically, turns her back to us. She does not need us to understand her, to bring her to justice. She avoids us. She shows us the way. We are the ones who send her along this course… The role of Media is played by Ioanna Kammenou Shafkalli. The premiere of “Medea” is also scheduled for early November 2005.
THOC’s Main Stage is planned to premiere in mid November with one of William Shakespeare’s most controversial plays “The Merchant of Venice”, a “comedy” with deep social implications. The play, under the Direction of Varnavas Kyriazis, is set in 16th century Venice. Shylock, a Jew living in Venice, makes his fortune being a loan shark, during a time when this professional activity was forbidden to Christians according to religious laws. Antonio, a Christian merchant, lives in the same city, and in his effort to help his young, penniless friend Bassanio marry the woman he loves, he borrows money from Shylock. The situation, however, does not go as planned for Antonio and Bassanio, and deadline to pay off their loan is closing up on them. Creative Team for «The Merchant of Venice»: Translated by Errikos Belier, Directed by Varnavas Kiriazis, Stage Design by Charis Kafkarides, Costume Design Stavros Antonopoulos, Music Giorgos Rodosthenous.
