The theatre adaptation is based on the book “Loxandra” by Maria Iordanidou, an Estia publication.

Written in 1963, “Loxandra” by Maria Iordanidou is one of the most popular novels in Modern Greek Literature. Directed by Efi Theodorou, dramatised by Savvas Kyriakides, and performed by a fifteen-member cast, “Loxandra” is to be staged for the first time at THOC’s Main Stage. Loxandra’s character is acted by Elisavet Constantinidou.

Loxandra lived in that old, beloved city, Constantinople.

A chorus of young actors allows us to walk in the footsteps of her real-fictional life. The presence of the chorus is a recurrent motif of the performance that draws a link between the past and the present, giving a new dimension to the story.

In that old, beloved city, people from different ethnical backgrounds shared a common life with tolerance and understanding. The temporariness of human existence, fears and anxieties, an uncertain homeland, and, above all, love for life. This spirit of freedom, cosmopolitanism, and tolerance pervades the play and is incarnated by Loxandra’s central character. She is a woman without age – she could be 30, 50 or 70 years old; as long as she has a big heart and an open embrace.
