Under the framework of the activities of THOC’s Theatre Retreat, THOC is continuing to offer three hour self-contained workshops every Wednesday with the aim of promoting knowledge and diffusing experience to specialised groups such as theatre professionals, teachers or theatre fans who wish to enrich their knowledge.
The workshops are available to a restricted number of participants for a very small fee every Wednesday afternoon from 4.00 – 7.00 pm at the Thoc Building (old GSP area).

FEBRUARY
10 February
“Musical Education on the stage of the classroom. Special guests: a brush, a stone and a blue cat”. With Maria Kostourou. Primarily for kindergarten and primary school teachers and all those involved with children’s creative educational programmes.
Approaching museology through activities that can be planned by a teacher and used in a classroom. Using figures from Material Culture as a starting point and using portrayal we will experiment with the process of transferring the museum experience outside the museum. During the practical part of the seminar, we will bring to life the studio of a sculptor and a painting with a carnival theme, while the role of the blue cat will be a surprise!
Maria Costourou is a teacher-museologist. She cooperates with museums and Cultural Organisations to promote museology in education and works at a public kindergarten in Greece.
17 February
Applied Theatre Workshop “School Bullying: prevention and awareness raising techniques”. With Christos Haritou and Anthi Papapericleous. Primarily for pre-primary and primary education teachers and individuals who work with children.
The experiential theatre workshop is based on the programme Remove the Power, which is being implemented at primary schools in Cyprus for the fifth consecutive year and features activities to raise awareness about and prevent bullying at schools. The workshop’s theme is the notion of accepting diversity and team building, as well as cultivating empathy.
Christos Haritou is a primary school teacher, an animator of applied theatre and a PhD candidate at the Institute of Education (UCL).
Anthi Papapericleous is a theatrologist and a theatre animator.

“Acting – covering all angles” with Nayia T Karacosta. For all teachers, as well as anyone who wishes to act/react. No age limit!
The aim of the Workshop is to familiarize participants with the world of Theatrical Games through experiential learning and experience so as to discover ways of converting Theatrical Games into a creative way to teach lessons in school. These interactive actions interrupt the spatial stream of a class room and place the teacher with and not opposite the pupils.

2 March
“Theatre as a creative intervention for anti-racism and acceptance of diversity in Education” in primary and pre-primary education. With Nadia Tomasidou. For primary and kindergarten teachers in Cyprus.
The experiential workshop is part of a theatrical pedagogical programme approved by the Ministry of Education and Culture on anti-racist education implemented in schools. It is based on a story on racism and diversity which participants will process through theatrical games and conventions. The programme was designed in a way which is in line with the objectives of the Ministry of Education and Culture for the academic year 2015-16, as well as the principles of the Council of Europe’s campaign against hate speech.
Nadia Tomasidou is a teacher with a doctorate in Theatre in Education. She runs a Theatre Workshop for children and teenagers.
9 March
“Theatrical techniques in the teaching of literature and foreign languages”. For secondary (and private) school teachers. With Andia Katsouri.
Theatrical techniques as a teaching method and an alternative way of learning the syllabus. Recording of a number of theatrical techniques, focusing on those which are more applicable in actual school time, and in an actual classroom, by using examples. How a lesson plan with theatrical techniques attracts the interest of pupils, prompts their active involvement (experiential exercises/workshops) and helps teachers conduct their lesson and fulfill their objectives.
Dr Andia Katsouri is a theatrologist specialising in ancient drama and teaches theatre at secondary school.
16 March
Applied Theatre Workshop “Healthy Inter-Racial Relations”. With Christos Haritou and Natalia Kuharchuk. Primarily for secondary school teachers and individuals who work with young people.
Using dramatized stories and scenarios, participants will explore creative ways of approaching the issue of inter-racial relations, creating alternative ways of communicating with their pupils.
Christos Haritou is a primary school teacher, an animator of applied theatre and a PhD candidate at the Institute of Education (UCL).
Natalia Kuharchuk is an applied theatre animator and an associate of the Cyprus Theatre Museum for the planning and implementation of Educational Programmes.
23 March
“Theatre as a tool to develop language and writing”, With Nadia Tomasidou. The workshop is for primary school teachers, English literature graduates, drama teachers and student teachers.
In this experiential workshop participants will have the opportunity to come into contact with creative practices and theatrical conventions which favour the development of language and writing in the production and practice of the written and spoken word, the structure of meaning with texts-bodies (ours and others) which act, feel and express themselves, as well as the participation in social activities and the creation of communities of speech.
Nadia Tomasidou is a teacher with a doctorate in Theatre in Education and a Masters in Theatrology.
30 March
“Theatrical game as a teaching tool for children of pre-school and early school age: Approaching the issue of FRIENDSHIP.” With Elena Polyviou and Maria Anastasiades. Primarily for kindergarten teachers, drama teachers and animators who deal with children aged 4 to 7 and student teachers.
The workshop aims to familiarize participants in theatrical games as a teaching tool, to experience specific techniques so that they can apply them in lesson plans and allow approaching the issue of friendship through dramatic process.
Elena Polyviou is a literature and drama teachers (MA in Applied Drama), an animator of theatrical games for children aged 3-18 and also has experience in applied theatre (Drama in education and community). Maria Anastasiades is a social worker and as an animator has taught theatrical games to children aged 3-15 for the past 10 years. Together they run an education and arts centre in Paphos.
APRIL
6 April
“Creative Visiualisation and Corporal Imagination”. With Korina Kontaxaki. For actors (amateurs and professionals) as well as drama teachers.
The workshop is based on the techniques of “creative visualization” and “dance imagery” and was originally designed to develop creativity and teamwork in actors to put on a performance. These techniques can also be used for educational reasons. Visualization has been proven to boost creativity and build strong personalities. It is an essential tool in schools and in the training of actors.
Korina Kontaxaki is an actress-director, a yoga teacher and playwright.
13 April
“Musical Theatre: essential ammunition and skills.” Directed at teenagers, students and/or interested actors. With George Rodosthenous.
Introduction to Musical Theatre. Techniques to approach song in combination with movement and the stage. There will be an opportunity at the end of the workshop to discuss admission to universities in Great Britain.
Dr George Rodosthenous is acting professor of stage directing at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries of the University of Leeds, an award winning director and composer.
20 April
Applied Theatre Workshop “Museum of Memories” . With Natalia Kuharchuk and Kyriaki Argyrou. Primarily for secondary school teachers and individuals who work with young people.
Participants are asked to make a space to recreate their experiences and memories, on a journey through individual and collective memory and the way it is recorded and expressed, using the museum, an exhibition venue of relics of the past as a trigger. Participants must bring with them an object relating to their memories as a child.
Natalia Kuharchuk is an applied theatre animator and an associate of the Cyprus Theatre Museum for the planning and implementation of Educational Programmes. Kyriaki Argyrou is a theatrologist and a theatre animator.

“Educational Drama as a tool of Intercultural Education in primary school (theoretical and practical analysis).” With Elena Socratous. For teachers and theatre animators.
The aim of the workshop is to develop the value and power of Educational Theatre as a teaching tool and specifically intercultural learning, for teachers to acquire basic knowledge on its elements and techniques and to convey the required knowledge on the role of the teacher in promoting intercultural education.
Elena Socratous is a Director/Theatre teacher/ PhD candidate in theatre education at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
Nominal participation fee: 6 euros
Participants will be given a certificate of participation.
