The dream of a ridiculous man | For one performance only

News

“Why don’t they know the Truth when I do know it?
Oh, how hard it is to be the only one who knows the Truth!”

Following highly successful runs at the State Regional Theatre of Crete and Poreia Theatre, Dostoyevsky’s masterpiece, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, translated, adapted and directed by Giorgos Koutlis, comes to Cyprus for just one performance on Sunday, 14 May 2023 in Nicosia as part of the “THOC hosts” initiative.

Giorgos Koutlis, who is at the forefront of the younger generation of directors, and the great jazz composer, Alex Drakos Ktistakis, who contributes an original score for the production, have created the ideal framework for an astonishing virtuoso performance by Nikolas Hanakoulas, in dialogue with video projections.

F.M. Dostoyevsky wrote The Dream of a Ridiculous Man – subtitled “A fantastic story” – in 1877, four years before his death. The short story sums up the great Russian writer’s philosophy of life.

The hero of the play is preparing to end his life. At the fateful moment, however, he suddenly falls into a deep sleep. In his dream, he travels to another planet, a paradise where people live in an ideal society, free and happy, full of joy and love. What happens in his dream completely changes the way in which the hero views his life and himself.

The work is not only a fantastic journey to a utopian universe, a transition from darkness to light; it is above all an ode to human life by one of the most insightful writers in the history of literature.
