George Orwell’s strikingly  prescient novel, 1984, boldly adapted for the stage by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, is a harsh and starkly truthful manifesto against totalitarianism. A dystopian masterpiece about the construction of reality, the falsification of the past, and the  policing of our thoughts, it is as capable of shocking us today as it was seventy-two years ago, when it was first published.

The main character, Winston Smith, living in the bleak world of Oceania, attempts in any way possible to maintain his sanity in the face of the suffocating surveillance state of Big Brother, in which all independent thinking is outlawed. When he falls in love with Julia, it does not stop him committing Thought Crimes: thinking, remembering, imagining, and hoping. Hoping, above all, for a future without Big Brother. However, any attempt at escape is futile.

A strong cast of actors directed by Leandros Taliotis vividly conveys Winston’s nightmarish experience and the terrifying world around him, demonstrating the inexhaustible, timeless power of 1984 and the explosiveness of its action. This daring, radical production does full justice to an unsurpassed book that serves to remind us that the future is already here.
