On Daniel’s birthday, his father gives him six tin soldiers. One of them, however, has only one leg. While the boy sleeps, his toys wake up and when the one-legged soldier meets a paper ballerina it is love at first sight. Somewhere among the other toys is a jack-in-the-box, who is jealous of them, and it is then that things become difficult. The tin soldier is suddenly separated from the ballerina, lost in the outside world, and encounters adventures, obstacles and difficulties.
The tin soldier is a touching story that has been retold for generations, without losing any of the elements that make it timeless. It is a tale that speaks to the heart and to the mind; a wonderful allegory about envy, respect, diversity, willpower, and support; about the strength love gives us to overcome life’s ordeals.
Andri Theodotou’s new theatrical version reintroduces audiences both young and old to one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most famous fairy tales. The play is directed by Lea Maleni, who, together with a company of talented actors, sweeps us along on the steadfast hero’s journey towards love and happiness with non-stop action, lively movement, vivid colours and plenty of music.
