The Classroom Play FAT by the up-and-coming writer Zoe Apostolidou, directed by Elena Sokratous, was written as part of the “Young Europe IV” programme of the European Theatre Convention (ETC), which will see eight new texts on diverse, inclusive themes produced for teenage audiences.

With directness, immediacy and a contemporary teenage language, FAT openly confronts the issue of fatphobia and the negative impact it has on the lives of those who suffer it, highlighting stigmatisation, prejudice, bullying, oppression and exclusion.

Frixos, a 17-year-old teenager, is bullied at school because of his physical size. Apart from the relationship he has with his close friend Effie, the rest of his social interactions take place online without Frixos ever revealing his appearance. Frixos reacts badly to the strong criticism of his body by both Effie and his mother.

The director and a young team of creators, sensitively approach the issues raised in the play in an attempt to overturn dominant perceptions and prejudices regarding diversity.

FAT begins its journey on 22 February 2024 in high school classrooms and will be performed to the public on 24 February 2024 at Theatro Apothikes. In early April, there will be another performance at the same venue as part of the Theatre Roadshow of the European Theatre in Palm project. It will then be hosted at the ETC's International Theatre Conference & Young Europe IV Festival, which will take place in Nova Gorica, Slovenia from 17 to 21 April.
