In a small provincial town in Greece, withering under the weight of the German occupation—burdened by decay and lawlessness—the young Margarita Perdikari lives between walls that keep closing in. Her home, filled with memories and shadows of a family that failed to protect her, becomes at once a refuge and a prison. Two worlds surround her: the dysfunctional reality of family relationships and the promise of another, more hopeful path, born through the gaze of friends and the wind of change. At the invisible frontier where History passes silently, Margarita finds the strength to stand tall and choose her own path of resistance.

A new text, based on the short story Margarita Perdikari by Dimitris Chatzis from the collection The End of Our Small Town, comes to life on stage at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The work, first published in 1953, speaks in a disarming language, full of vivid imagery and sharply drawn characters, drawing inspiration from real people and the author’s personal experiences.

The transition from the experience of reading to a collective experience of viewing within the classrooms of Secondary Education is undertaken by Elena Pavlidou and Nikoletta Verykiou, whose earlier work demonstrates their love for the heroes of literature. With only the absolutely essential stage objects in their “suitcase,” they transpose the narrative journey of young Margarita into a dense dramatic composition that meets their personal, contemporary perspective. Their approach revitalises both the historical and existential substrate of the work, inviting us on a journey of discovery, awakening, self-knowledge, and freedom.
