“…today, the rebellious are eliminated early.”
Ticket presales are open for the New Stage “Nicos Charalambous” production To You Who Are Listening to Me by Loula Anagnostaki, directed by Thanasis Georgiou.
Nine characters come together in an apartment in multicultural Berlin. Outside, the city is in turmoil—demonstrations, clashes, unrest. Agis, a writer, is preparing for a pacifist anti-globalisation forum, while Sofia pursues an illegal yet promising deal. Suddenly, the echo of the city invades the “inside” space and turns into an imagined demonstration. One character after another addresses an imaginary audience, bringing to the surface traumas, hidden desires, and unfulfilled expectations.
This deeply confessional discourse—at times ironic, at others humorous—with its underlying signifiers and visual and sonic cues, becomes a confrontation with memory, foreignness, and uncertainty; a rupture that reveals inner fractures and collective breaks, absolute loneliness, and existential deprivation.
To You Who Are Listening to Me, written in 2003, is Loula Anagnostaki’s final play and one of the most powerful and multilayered contemporary texts of post-war Greek theatre. With her incisive and sensitive writing, Anagnostaki composes a fragmented world in which politics and History intersect with personal experience.
Director Thanasis Georgiou, together with an outstanding team of performers and collaborators, is called upon to serve a work that is strikingly alive today, transforming the closed Berlin room into an open arena of silent protest, where the private intertwines with the public and individual experience with the collective.
