I might say that I exist out of curiosity.
Panayiotis Larkou adapts and directs Homer’s Odyssey by Michalis Ganas, one of Greece’s contemporary and most important poets, in a lively and humorous retelling of Odysseus’s return to his homeland.
He makes the well-known myth accessible to young audiences, while maintaining the sense of epic narrative and its human dimension. Every part of it tells a story, every word unfolds an adventure. The brave Odysseus embarks on the long journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War, while his wife Penelope constantly weaves and unpicks Laertes’ shroud. He resists the temptations of the Sirens and the Lotus Eaters, survives an encounter with the Cyclops, faces the sorceress Circe, and has to contend with many other mythical creatures along the way.
Homer’s Odyssey is not just about a great adventure and the longing to return home; it is also about a man no monster could ever devour, because he had already been consumed by curiosity from an early age.
The director and his exceptional creative team bring a fresh and sensitive perspective to a familiar tale, while the nine actors in the superb cast conjure up a world full of colour and life through lightning-fast changes of roles as they perform the famous story of homecoming, the search for identity, and the battle against the unknown and against time.
