New Theatre Workshop with Izumi Ashizawa

Continuing the series of workshops offered by renowned professionals in their fields, coming from abroad to Cyprus especially to teach workshops for theatre professionals and theatre students or semi-professionals, THOC brings to Cyprus Izumi Ashizawa, Assistant Professor in Directing and Devising at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, founder of Izumi Ashizawa.  Theatre which explores physical story-telling with unconventional puppetry and object animation. Based on Japanese physical performance techniques, Ashizawa’s movement techniques are taught around the world and her devised pieces have been performed internationally, including the U.S.A., Japan, the U.K., Canada, Norway, Austria, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Romania, Poland, Turkey, Iran, Australia, the Cayman Islands, and Peru.

Izumi Ashizawa has won numerous awards including the Medal of Honor for Cultural Excellence from the City of Piura in Peru, the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Faculty Achievement Award- Excellence in Directing and Technology, Capital Fringe Director’s Award, UNESCO-Aschberg Award, IIFUT Best Performance Award, Tehran Municipality Culture and Arts Organization Award, Australian Government Fund for the Arts, and Norwegian Cultural Fund, National Endowment for the Arts Fund, APAP Cultural Exchange Fund.

Ashizawa has served as a guest artist lecturer in various universities which include Yale University, Carnegie Mellon University, Northwestern University, UCLA, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (U.K.), Central School of Speech and Drama (U.K.), National Academy of Theatre and Television (Bulgaria), National Academy of Arts (Norway). Ashizawa holds a MFA from Yale School of Drama.

Course description:
Study in and practice of the various principles of stylized acting, based on Japanese models. The models of this semester include, Noh, Kabuki, the Suzuki method, and martial arts.
Topic of the course is physical theatre, and students will learn both practical and theoretical aspects through physical practices.

Course objectives:
- To practice body-oriented routine exercises based on Japanese acting techniques—Noh, Kabuki, Suzuki, and philosophy of Zen.
- To establish the relationship between your body and space.
- To do a series of physical ensemble exercises

Workshop Objectives:
Participants who successfully complete this course will be able to heighten their consciousness in body “performance”.  Participants will learn spirituality through physical exercises.
