“I never knew you to have a hope or a dream or say a half-wise thing. You worked for fifty-eight years, nine hours a day, in a garden so steep a horse wouldn’t climb it! […]
You spent your life sitting on brambles and wouldn’t move in case someone took your seat!”
Successful Irish writer Charlie Tynan returns to his birthplace for the funeral of his adoptive father. While sorting out things at home, he reminisces about the father-figure, the gardener Da (short for Daddy), and has with him a conversation they never got to have while they were both alive. The play is a return to the memories of childhood and adolescence, and to the often thorny relationship between father and son. Set at the crossroads of two worlds, memory and the present time, the comic gives way to the dramatic, shedding light on the simple and deeply humane things in life.
Leonard’s tender gaze has been brought to stage by director Maria Mannaridou-Karsera in collaboration with distinguished actor Costas Vichas as Da and a vibrant ensemble of actors and contributors. The play is a revival of THOC’s 1996 stage production. Da is scheduled to travel “Away” in a tour of the island’s municipalities and communities. Due to the new situation, it has been adapted for presentation at THOC’s New Stage.
